Arthur Hayes Warns AI Share Selloffs Could Trigger a Credit Crisis

Hayes warns AI share unlocks could hit Bitcoin, as filings detail resale risks and Fed data shows bank assets fell while credit grew.

Key Notes

  • Hayes describes an AI-credit shock followed by a possible crypto recovery.
  • Share unlocks do not guarantee selling or automatically dilute ownership.
  • The latest reported weekly bank-asset decline coincided with an increase in bank credit.

Arthur Hayes warns that AI share sales could tighten credit and pressure Bitcoin before a policy-led recovery.

His November 5 essay, D is for Dilution, examines SpaceX and Anthropic share supply and a possible OpenAI listing.

The Share-Supply Risk Behind the Warning

Hayes projects 8.6 billion SpaceX shares unlocking by June 2027 and an 83% supply-expansion scenario for Anthropic. At a hypothetical $1.5 trillion valuation, he puts absorption at $1.245 trillion.

Those are Hayes’s estimates. An unlock permits existing holders to sell. It does not mean they will all sell, or automatically create new shares that reduce everyone else’s ownership percentage. Vesting awards, conversions, and new issuance require separate analysis.

The SEC’s lockup guidance explains why the risk nevertheless matters: restrictions keep insiders’ shares from reaching the market immediately after an IPO, and prices can fall in anticipation of their eventual sale. The terms and timing vary by offering.

Hayes’s trillion-dollar illustration is also a scenario, rather than an accounting requirement for fresh investment. Multiplying an assumed valuation by a supply percentage values a block of stock at that price; it does not establish how much cash must enter a market, where prices depend on the trades buyers and sellers actually make.

What the Company Documents Establish

SpaceX’s IPO announcement says its Class A shares began trading on June 12, 2026, and that the offering closed with about 638.9 million shares sold. That original offering is distinct from later restrictions expiring on shares held by employees and early investors.

Anthropic’s November 2 amended filing warns that future share sales, or their anticipated availability, could hurt its market price and ability to raise equity. It sets out staged releases tied to the prospectus date and earnings announcements, with restrictions extending to 180 or 365 days for different holders.

Several share counts and percentages remain blank in that preliminary document. It does not establish Hayes’s 83% figure as a company-confirmed outcome. Actual resale eligibility also depends on the relevant agreements, vesting and securities-law restrictions.

For OpenAI, he cites a reported $20 billion fundraising target at a $1.25 trillion valuation. His January IPO case is an assumption.

Bank Lending Is the Link to Bitcoin

Hayes’s proposed chain runs from weaker equities to costlier AI debt, slower bank expansion and less crypto liquidity.

The Federal Reserve’s October 30 banking release offers a more specific picture of the latest reported week. Seasonally adjusted commercial-bank assets fell from $26.1261 trillion to $26.0802 trillion in the week ending October 21, a decline of $45.9 billion.

Bank credit rose over the same period, from $19.9854 trillion to $20.0142 trillion, an increase of $28.8 billion. A fall in total assets therefore does not, on its own, establish a contraction in lending and securities holdings. The release does not identify an AI-driven cause for the weekly movement.

A Bitcoin Recovery Depends on the Policy Response

He believes a severe downturn could prompt fresh official liquidity and benefit crypto. That remains a forecast; the essay announces no new quantitative-easing program.

The position follows Maelstrom’s trading exit in October. CoinScreamer also examined Hayes’s earlier AI thesis and his proposed compute futures market.
