Key Notes
- Bitcoin surged above $80,000 as its post-election recovery accelerated.
- Coinbase’s afternoon price snapshot was near $80,757 after a low around $75,601.
- The rebound pressured bearish positions while Trump-linked meme coins remained weaker.
Bitcoin surged through $80,000 on Wednesday, extending a sharp recovery from its overnight slide as investors digested Democrats’ victory in the US midterm elections.
At 15:24 UTC on November 4, Coinbase quoted BTC near $80,757. The exchange’s separate 24-hour trading statistics showed a gain of approximately 4.0%, with a low of $75,600.64 and a high of $81,130.79.
The Recovery Accelerates Above $80,000
Bitcoin was still below $79,300 at the start of the 15:00 UTC minute. The move then gathered speed. Coinbase’s one-minute trading data showed Bitcoin reaching $80,094.97 during the 15:04 minute and finishing that minute at $80,067.25. It closed the following minute near $80,339.
Trading activity expanded with the price jump. About 122 BTC changed hands on Coinbase during the 15:04 minute, compared with roughly 18 BTC in the preceding minute. The figures cover Coinbase’s BTC-USD market.
The advance carried Bitcoin substantially beyond the levels reached in the morning. Our earlier coverage followed its recovery above $78,000 after election-night selling pushed it below $76,000.
Measured from Coinbase’s rolling 24-hour low to its latest trade around 15:24 UTC, the rebound was approximately 6.7%. The gain from that low was roughly $5,054, underscoring the scale of the reversal within a single trading day.
Markets Reassess the Election Result
Democrats won both the House and Senate, ending unified Republican control of Washington when the new Congress takes office in January. The outcome raises obstacles for parts of President Donald Trump’s legislative agenda, although it does not immediately rewrite existing financial rules.
Earlier in the session, TDX Strategies founder Dick Lo told CoinDesk that a clear election outcome had reduced political uncertainty after Bitcoin’s initial drop. His assessment came while the cryptocurrency was still trading around $78,000.
The rally also stood apart from weakness in Trump-linked meme coins. CoinScreamer’s token update recorded TRUMP and MELANIA trading lower over 24 hours while Bitcoin advanced. The contrast left the largest cryptocurrency recovering faster than the tokens most closely associated with the president’s personal brand.
A Rapid Rally Pressures Bearish Positions
A rising market increases losses on short positions, which profit when prices fall. If a leveraged trader’s collateral becomes insufficient, an exchange can close part or all of the position. Coinbase’s margin guidance illustrates how forced buy orders can reduce a short position.
Forced buying can add momentum to an already rising market as bearish traders reduce exposure. It is different from fresh investment by buyers planning to hold Bitcoin for the long term: both can lift prices, but they have different implications for the durability of a recovery. Continued trading above $80,000 would leave the market in a stronger position than during the overnight test below $76,000.
