Key Notes
- Arthur Hayes proposed futures and perpetual swaps tied to a FLOP-based AI compute benchmark.
- The proposed market concerns inference, the work of running trained AI models, rather than model training.
- FLOP remains in development, with mainnet and token generation targeted for the first quarter of 2027.
Arthur Hayes has proposed futures and perpetual swaps tied to AI computing costs, using Flop Network as the source of a benchmark price.
His October 26 essay, The Trifecta, outlines contracts rather than announcing a live derivatives exchange.

Turning Inference Into a Tradable Service
FLOP’s draft design connects AI agents seeking computation with operators running compatible GPUs. Buyers specify a model, the work required, an acceptable response time and a fee in FLOP. Providers would earn the token for completing verified tasks.
The focus is inference: running an already trained model to produce an answer. That is distinct from training the model itself, which requires a different allocation of computing resources.
The draft separates GPU operators, called miners, from validators that produce blocks and verify work. Owning hardware alone would not establish that a requested job was completed; the design includes work verification, disputes and financial penalties.
A Benchmark for Futures and Perpetual Swaps
Hayes proposes an hourly, volume-weighted Flop Reference Compute Rate, or FRCR. Quarterly futures and perpetual swaps would use dollar margin despite a FLOP-denominated underlying price.
The intended audience includes compute buyers seeking a hedge and traders seeking price exposure without operating hardware. Hayes’s ambition is a global benchmark; its adoption remains unproven.
The currency distinction is consequential: a dollar-settled contract referencing a token-denominated price is not simply a fixed-dollar GPU rental. Hayes’s proposed structure accounts for the relationship between the compute rate and FLOP’s dollar exchange rate.
Public Launch Is Still Ahead
The project’s launch FAQ, updated October 20, gives November 3 as a working testnet target and the first quarter of 2027 for mainnet and token generation, tracking toward early February. Those are development targets, not confirmed launch dates.
The FAQ says the FLOP token does not yet exist as a traded asset. The team describes a private development network used to test setup before broader participation.
The operator hub likewise labels its environment as a development network and its release as unreleased. It says public enrollment and live public telemetry depend on verified network details and published data sources.
The separate testnet plan describes roughly 90 days of testing with tokens that carry no value. Its draft status means the planned market should not be confused with a production venue already supplying an established compute price.
Building on an Earlier FLOP Pitch
CoinScreamer’s earlier coverage examined Hayes’s argument that an AI investment bust could leave computing capacity cheaper and more abundant. It also covered his pitch for agents to purchase inference through FLOP.
The new essay adds a proposed financial layer to that earlier marketplace concept. A spot service must attract actual suppliers and buyers before prices generated by its activity can become a widely accepted reference for derivatives.
