Key Notes

  • Chris Dixon confirmed a16z Crypto’s rebrand to a16z Frontier and a broader investment remit.
  • Dixon says the team will continue investing in crypto and related ventures.
  • Ali Yahya’s reported departure remains separately attributed to The Information.

Andreessen Horowitz’s crypto investment team is becoming a16z Frontier and expanding its new fund’s scope beyond crypto startups, Chris Dixon confirmed on October 22.

The managing partner’s announcement, also published on the rebranded official website, says the team will continue investing in crypto and related ventures while backing a broader range of emerging technologies.

The confirmation updates an earlier report by The Information. The rebrand and wider remit are now publicly announced, rather than solely based on that report.

A Broader Investment Remit

Dixon describes Frontier’s focus as startups developing new technologies and markets that may take years to mature. His examples include AI-enabled products, autonomous machines, advances in biology and medicine, and networks connecting people with increasingly capable software agents.

He argues that blockchains are becoming infrastructure used by financial companies and other businesses, making a company’s purpose more useful than a narrow technology label. In that framework, crypto remains relevant to payments, programmable financial services and transactions between machines.

Dixon says he will lead the fund alongside a16z founders Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz and general partners Eddy Lazzarin and Guy Wuollet. The operating teams will continue supporting existing and future portfolio companies across functions including regulation, hiring, marketing and technical research.

Ali Yahya’s Reported Departure Is a Separate Development

The Information also reported that general partner and crypto-team founding member Ali Yahya is leaving to build his own startup, according to a Bloomingbit summary of its coverage.

That detail remains attributed to the report. Dixon’s announcement names the leadership for the expanded strategy but does not explain Yahya’s departure or identify a new company he is forming.

The $2.2B Fund Was Announced in May

The team announced its fifth crypto fund on May 5 with $2.2 billion to back startups turning blockchain infrastructure into practical products. The original Fund 5 statement emphasized stablecoins, onchain finance and applications involving AI agents.

CoinScreamer’s fund coverage examined that earlier investment thesis. The Frontier announcement expands the new fund’s scope; it does not announce another $2.2 billion raise or specify a reduced crypto allocation.

The shift also adds context to our Multicoin report, which described that firm maintaining a crypto-focused mandate as AI attracts other investors. The two firms are choosing different investment boundaries, even as crypto and AI increasingly overlap.
