Key Notes

  • Multicoin Capital is retaining its crypto investment mandate rather than expanding into standalone AI businesses, according to Bloomberg.
  • The firm’s own framework still includes crypto-AI opportunities such as computing marketplaces and identity services.
  • Kyle Samani’s February departure from daily management to explore other technologies was separate from the firm’s investment mandate.

Multicoin Capital is keeping its investment strategy centered on crypto rather than widening its mandate to standalone artificial-intelligence startups, according to Bloomberg. The Austin-based firm is holding to that approach as other digital-asset investors pursue opportunities in the AI boom.

The firm manages approximately $2.7 billion in assets, Bloomberg reported on October 19, citing general partner and venture co-head Spencer Applebaum. He argued that Multicoin’s digital-asset expertise gives it an advantage in finding promising businesses.

Bloomberg also reported that Multicoin is taking longer to deploy its latest venture fund, raised in 2022. Its response is to remain focused on its existing specialty rather than expand the investment mandate into a different technology sector.

Crypto’s overlap with AI remains in scope

Maintaining a crypto mandate still leaves room for businesses serving AI users. Multicoin’s own investment framework explicitly includes the intersection of crypto and AI, naming computing marketplaces, trust and identity services, and applications among its areas of interest.

The same framework covers blockchain execution, stablecoins, decentralized finance, payments, tokenized assets and decentralized physical infrastructure networks. These categories describe a range of potential investments within crypto, without requiring the firm to become a general-purpose AI investor.

Multicoin runs a hedge fund and several venture funds spanning public and private markets. The $2.7 billion figure describes assets under management across the firm, while the reported decision concerns the scope of its investment strategy.

Samani’s personal shift was a separate decision

The latest comments follow co-founder Kyle Samani’s February decision to step back from day-to-day responsibilities. At that time, the firm said his interests had expanded into AI, robotics and longevity technology.

As The Block reported on February 4, Samani also said he would continue making personal crypto investments and supporting Multicoin portfolio companies. His decision to explore other technologies did not amount to a withdrawal from every crypto role or a new AI mandate for Multicoin.

The firm’s current website lists co-founder Tushar Jain as managing partner and Applebaum and Shayon Sengupta as general partners and co-heads of venture. Applebaum’s stated focus includes DeFi, physical infrastructure networks and crypto consumer applications.

The debate extends beyond investment funds. CoinScreamer recently covered SWI’s €800 million financing for AI infrastructure, including plans to reposition assets at the former Bitcoin miner Genesis Digital. That is an operating-business transition; Multicoin’s decision concerns where a specialist investment firm deploys its capital.
