Privacy-centric cryptocurrency Zcash (ZEC) reached its highest price level since 2016, pushing the network’s total market capitalization above the $20 billion milestone. Data from CoinGecko shows ZEC touched an intraday peak of $1,249.28 before pulling back toward $1,195. The token recorded a 45% gain over the past week and a 138% rally over a 30-day period.
Despite the recent price surge, Zcash remains below its historical peak established shortly after launch, when low circulating supply pushed prices to an all-time high of $3,191.93 on October 28, 2016.
Zcash operates on a dual-transaction model, allowing users to choose between transparent transfers and “shielded” transactions. Shielded transfers utilize zero-knowledge proofs (zk-SNARKs) to validate payment validity without disclosing the sender, recipient, or transactional amount.
Institutional Exposure and AI Privacy Concerns Drive Momentum
The primary driver behind Zcash’s recent momentum is Grayscale’s conversion of its legacy Zcash Trust into an exchange-traded fund (ETF). Trading on NYSE Arca under the ticker ZCSH, the fund gives retail and institutional investors direct exposure to ZEC through traditional brokerage accounts. As of Friday’s market close, ZCSH traded at $83.77 per share with approximately $463.2 million in assets under management (AUM).
Market analysts point to shifting institutional perspectives on digital privacy as a key tailwind for the asset class. In a recent analysis, Grayscale Head of Research Zach Pandl noted that the proliferation of artificial intelligence tools makes tracking and linking public blockchain transactions to real-world identities significantly easier. Consequently, zero-knowledge financial privacy features are increasingly viewed by researchers and market participants as an essential layer for institutional digital asset settlement.
