Bitget to Exit Japanese Market and Liquidate Unclosed Positions by Year-End

Bitget has announced a complete withdrawal from Japan following years of regulatory warnings, locking out new users immediately and mandating position closures by December 31.

Global cryptocurrency exchange Bitget announced on August 3 that it will permanently halt services for residents of Japan, marking the end of its operations in the country following repeated regulatory warnings. Effective immediately, the platform has stopped accepting new user registrations from Japanese residents.

Bitget will begin progressively restricting existing accounts on November 1, 2026. Account holders who fail to close their open trading positions before December 31 will face forced liquidation by the exchange. The platform advised users who believe they were improperly flagged as Japanese residents to complete Level 2 identity verification, including proof of address, prior to the November 1 cutoff to maintain full access.

The exit follows a series of enforcement actions by Japanese authorities against Bitget for operating without proper license credentials. Japan’s Financial Services Agency issued formal warnings to the exchange in March 2023 and November 2024 for offering unregistered digital asset services to local retail investors. Pressure escalated further in June 2025 when the Kanto Local Finance Bureau issued a warning against BTG Technology Holdings Limited, the entity operating Bitget, for soliciting unregistered over-the-counter crypto derivatives transactions within the jurisdiction.

Bitget stated it will communicate directly with affected account holders via email to outline asset withdrawal procedures and transition steps leading up to the final December deadline.
