Key Notes

  • China’s third-quarter GDP grew 4.5% year on year, beating the 4.4% consensus forecast.
  • September retail sales rose 1.1%, above the 0.5% forecast and August’s 0.4% pace.
  • Bitcoin joined the rebound, while the reported Nasdaq advance was in futures ahead of the US cash session.

Bitcoin rose alongside Asian equities and Nasdaq futures on Monday after China reported faster-than-expected economic growth. The data offered a firmer backdrop for risk-taking following last week’s volatility, although the session also featured lower oil prices and a broader recovery in stocks.

At 08:02 UTC on October 19, Coinbase’s BTC-USD quote showed Bitcoin at $82,661.86. The exchange’s separately checked rolling 24-hour statistics at 07:55 UTC recorded a high of $83,076.23, leaving the latest trade below that earlier peak.

China’s growth and retail data beat expectations

China’s economy expanded 4.5% from a year earlier in the third quarter, up from 4.3% in the second quarter, according to the National Bureau of Statistics’ release. Trading Economics’ calendar put the consensus forecast at 4.4%. The upside surprise was modest: GDP exceeded consensus by 0.1 percentage point.

The annual GDP figure measures inflation-adjusted output. Separately, the economy grew 1.2% from the previous quarter, while output over the first nine months was 4.6% higher than a year earlier. The quarterly and annual comparisons describe different periods and should not be treated as interchangeable growth rates.

September retail sales of consumer goods increased 1.1% year on year, compared with August’s 0.4%, the official retail release showed. That exceeded the 0.5% consensus recorded by Trading Economics. The annual growth rate accelerated by 0.7 percentage point; seasonally adjusted sales rose 0.35% from August.

The GDP result and retail-sales pickup supplied two positive surprises, rather than relying on a single indicator. The recovery nevertheless remains uneven: the NBS reported that fixed-asset investment excluding rural households fell 7.2% over the first nine months.

Nasdaq futures join the Asian rebound

CoinDesk’s market report recorded Nasdaq futures up more than 1%, Japan’s Nikkei gaining 1.8% and South Korea’s Kospi advancing 0.6%. Those are reported session snapshots, rather than a synchronized set of closing prices.

The Nasdaq figure refers to futures trading ahead of the US cash session, not a completed gain in the Nasdaq Composite or Nasdaq-100 cash index. Bitcoin trades continuously, while the equity markets and their futures contracts follow different trading schedules.

CoinDesk also reported lower oil prices. That gave the rebound more than one possible influence: China’s economic surprise formed part of the day’s risk backdrop, rather than proving that it caused every move in Bitcoin and equities.

Bitcoin’s recovery follows a volatile week

The Chinese figures were released at 02:00 UTC. Coinbase’s minute candles show Bitcoin already near $82,351 immediately beforehand. The first release-minute candle closed around $82,377, placing the later move toward $83,000 within a longer trading sequence.

That sequence follows the sub-$80,000 decline and recovery covered in CoinScreamer’s October 15 report. Stronger US producer-inflation figures were part of that earlier backdrop; Monday’s Chinese data provide a different macroeconomic input.

For now, the verified development is a rebound across Bitcoin and several equity benchmarks alongside better Chinese growth figures. The current crypto quote, earlier stock-market snapshots and official economic data each have their own observation time; none establishes where the markets will finish the day.
