  • Buterin says exchanges should prioritize survival over competition during the next two years.
  • Binance’s preliminary findings describe compromised employee devices and access to wallet-signing systems.
  • Buterin’s earlier essay also highlighted risks from repeatedly loading crypto website code.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin says crypto exchanges should put survival ahead of competition over the next two years, as major security breaches expose weaknesses beyond blockchain code.

Speaking to Moneycontrol in Mumbai, he said exchanges, custodians and institutions are adopting a more defensive posture. Their responsibility, he argued, is “not to win but to survive.”

From Interface Risk to Signing Access

Buterin said recent large attacks have increasingly targeted user interfaces and centralized components, even as smart-contract security improves. His distinction puts the focus on the software and organizations surrounding a blockchain, including the interfaces that prepare transactions and the systems that authorize them.

Binance’s initial findings illustrate how operational access can become the route to an onchain theft. The exchange said approximately $6.34 billion in digital assets were affected by its October 29 incident.

According to Binance, attackers used a fake recruitment process to persuade an engineer to download a malicious coding assignment. They later moved through compromised devices and internal tooling, obtained container-deployment credentials and reached the wallet-signing service. The company described the investigation as preliminary and subject to independent review.

CoinScreamer’s attack chronology traces that sequence. It shows why a blockchain processing valid transactions can coexist with a serious failure in the systems authorized to initiate them. Transaction validity alone does not establish that the account owner intended a transfer.

The Website Is Part of the Security Boundary

The interview follows Buterin’s October 31 digital minimalism essay, which raised a related concern about crypto websites. Each visit can fetch fresh application code from a server, creating another opportunity for a compromised site to deliver malicious software.

He described using command-line tools for some ENS updates and privacy payments. That changes the software a user relies on; it does not remove the need to trust the device, installed code and transaction-signing process.

Our earlier coverage also noted that the payment tool he mentioned was experimental and unaudited. Replacing a browser interface with local software is therefore not, by itself, a security guarantee.

Persistent Breaches Could Bring Greater Accountability

Buterin warned that continued hacks could lead regulators to demand more conservative behavior from companies. He also encouraged stronger safeguards, including multisignature arrangements and more scrutiny of security practices.

His regulatory warning was conditional on the persistence of security failures. The immediate challenge for exchanges is to protect existing assets through the next wave of attacks while rebuilding confidence in their ability to handle additional business.
