Key Notes

  • Robinhood plans to expand its on-chain stock token selection from about 200 to thousands.
  • Tenev says private company tokens are planned at scale, with no launch date disclosed.
  • Robinhood supports both Bitstamp and on-chain derivatives, with access depending on local rules.

Robinhood plans to expand the roughly 200 stock tokens on Robinhood Chain into the thousands before bringing private company tokens to a broader market, CEO Vlad Tenev said. He described a substantial increase in the assets available through the company’s blockchain, while leaving the timing of the private-market rollout open.

Speaking to The Rollup in an interview published September 30, Tenev said expanding the selection was the immediate priority. The conversation took place at HOOD Summit in Houston, where Robinhood also outlined new trading products for US customers.

From Around 200 Tokens to Thousands

The expansion concerns Robinhood’s newer on-chain Stock Tokens. These differ from its older European offering, now called Classic Stock Tokens, which the company reported had reached approximately 2,000 products in its fourth-quarter results released in February. The two counts describe separate offerings.

Robinhood introduced the new tokens alongside its public mainnet in July. Its launch announcement described access through Robinhood Wallet in more than 120 countries, subject to local restrictions, with tokens usable in decentralized trading, lending pools and as collateral.

Tenev framed the next stage around widening access to US financial assets for people overseas. He said an internet connection and a smartphone should make it easier for investors in markets such as Ecuador and parts of Africa and Eastern Europe to reach products available through Robinhood’s US business.

Private Companies Are the Next Target

For private company tokens, Tenev said Robinhood had worked out an approach and expected to offer them at scale. He linked that ambition to relationships built through Robinhood Ventures and the company’s underwriting work with businesses preparing to go public.

Those relationships give Robinhood opportunities to discuss tokenization directly with private companies, he said. Some have approached the firm about participating. He did not name prospective issuers or explain which companies would be included in an initial rollout.

The interview did not disclose a launch date, eligible jurisdictions or the legal structure of the planned private company tokens. It therefore sets out a product direction rather than announcing that the expanded offering is already available.

Bitstamp and Lighter Serve Different Routes

Asked about Lighter and Robinhood’s derivatives strategy, Tenev said the company supports both decentralized and centralized perpetual futures. The choice of which product reaches a market first depends on what its regulatory framework permits, and Robinhood is open to offering multiple products.

Robinhood’s July announcement introduced access to perpetual futures on Lighter through its self-custody wallet for eligible users in selected jurisdictions. Its newly announced US perpetuals, meanwhile, use Bitstamp, with Tenev describing a shared global liquidity pool.

The September 29 Summit announcement says the US contracts are coming in the following months through Robinhood Derivatives. Bitcoin and Ether contracts will allow up to 10x leverage. That rollout is separate from the availability of stock tokens or decentralized perpetuals in any particular country.

Token Exposure Does Not Equal Share Ownership

Robinhood’s current product disclosures describe Stock Tokens as debt securities issued by Robinhood Assets (Jersey) Limited. They track underlying securities economically but do not give holders legal or beneficial rights in those shares or their issuers. The tokens are unavailable in the United States or to US persons.

Those terms matter as Robinhood promotes wider access to public and private assets. Investors will need the eventual private-token documentation to establish what they would own, how transfers and redemptions would work, and which restrictions would apply.
