Mastercard has introduced Stablecoin Security, a service designed to help financial institutions identify fraud, scams and sanctions risks before completing stablecoin payments. The product combines information about a payment with blockchain intelligence, giving banks a risk score they can use when deciding whether a transfer should proceed or receive further review.
The company announced the service at Money20/20 USA in Las Vegas on October 19, naming Borderless.xyz and Keyrails as its initial partners. It is launching first in North America, with worldwide commercial availability expected in 2027.
A risk score before funds move
Stablecoin Security examines the context of a transaction, the source of funds, potential exposure to restricted parties and indicators of scams. Mastercard says the assessment can begin before funds move onchain and extend across the fiat and stablecoin stages of a payment.
The service is delivered through an application programming interface, allowing financial institutions to connect it to existing fraud, compliance and case-management systems. Mastercard presents that integration as a way to support stablecoin payments within an institution’s established risk processes.
For a cross-border business payment, the bank or its service provider could use the assessment before sending funds to an overseas supplier. The resulting score supports a decision about whether the payment should continue as expected or be investigated further. The institution still needs to make that decision; a screening score is not itself a guarantee that a transaction is safe.
The timing is central to the proposition. A review conducted before a transfer is completed can inform the payment decision, while analysis after funds have moved serves a different investigative purpose. Mastercard is positioning the service around that broader payment journey, rather than only the activity visible on a blockchain.
North America first, with expansion planned for 2027
Borderless.xyz connects financial institutions to licensed stablecoin providers and manages payment routing and operations across markets. Keyrails focuses on high-value cross-border trade payments, particularly in emerging economies. Both have participated in Mastercard’s Start Path Blockchain and Digital Assets program.
Those partners provide routes into existing payment flows, but their broader network coverage should not be confused with worldwide availability of the new screening service at launch. Mastercard’s stated commercial rollout remains North America first, followed by expected global availability next year.
The company also plans to expand adoption through BVNK in 2027. As The Block reported, Mastercard completed its acquisition of the stablecoin infrastructure business in August and is building products from the combined capabilities.
CoinScreamer’s coverage of Mastercard Global Money Platform examined the October 15 launch of accounts, conversion, card spending and bank payouts spanning fiat and stablecoins. Stablecoin Security adds a risk-assessment service to that wider payments push, with a separate rollout schedule.
The development follows Visa Direct’s move into USDC-funded payouts. As payment companies connect stablecoins with conventional financial services, the latest Mastercard announcement puts the checks around those flows alongside the infrastructure used to move the money.
