IBM has announced major updates to its enterprise digital asset infrastructure, introducing a beta integration with Swift’s blockchain-based shared ledger and expanding its IBM Digital Asset Haven platform to on-premises environments. The developments aim to support financial institutions modernizing cross-border payment rails and managing tokenized assets within strict security and regulatory parameters.
Through the new ISO 20022 Messaging Adapter feature in IBM Digital Asset Haven, participating institutions can initiate tokenized deposit transactions over Swift’s permissioned ledger using standard financial messaging formats. Swift’s global network connects over 12,500 institutions across more than 200 countries and territories. By building on established ISO 20022 standards, banks can process 24/7 tokenized transfers without abandoning legacy compliance frameworks or developing custom, blockchain-specific workflows.
The integration follows the concept rollout at Sibos 2025, developed alongside more than 40 global financial institutions. Swift’s shared ledger transitioned to active testing within nine months, with 17 first-mover banks piloting tokenized deposit transactions. Early participants successfully tested the interoperability between IBM Digital Asset Haven and Swift’s shared infrastructure, demonstrating how regulated lenders can move digital assets alongside traditional payment flows.
IBM Digital Asset Haven Extends to On-Premises Beta Deployment
In parallel, IBM introduced an on-premises beta deployment option for Digital Asset Haven. First launched in October 2025 across SaaS and hybrid configurations, the expansion allows banks, central authorities, and regulated firms to run their entire digital asset stack, including custody, stablecoin operations, and tokenized deposits, within their own data centers.
The on-premises deployment runs directly on IBM Z and IBM LinuxONE systems, eliminating dependencies on public cloud infrastructure. Designed to deliver high transaction throughput, the system integrates hardware-backed security via embedded IBM Crypto Express Hardware Security Modules (HSMs) and confidential computing environments to isolate production, development, and testing workloads.
The client-controlled infrastructure operates entirely within the institution’s private IBM LinuxONE or IBM Z data centers, engineered for continuous availability.
Auditable key management supports structured key generation ceremonies and cold storage operations through the IBM Offline Signing Orchestrator, producing regulatory-compliant audit documentation.
The unified API framework maintains identical application programming interfaces and core workflows across SaaS, hybrid, and on-premises environments, enabling seamless transitions without software rewrites.
The push comes as global financial institutions increasingly upgrade payments infrastructure to handle high-frequency, programmable transactions. By combining Swift’s cooperative settlement network with private, hardware-secured infrastructure, IBM is positioning its hardware and software ecosystem as a bridge for traditional banking institutions entering the tokenized asset economy.
