South Korean crypto exchanges Gopax and Prabang have suffered security breaches amid a wider series of attacks on the country’s financial sector, News1 reported on October 14. Both exchanges said customers’ cryptocurrency assets were unaffected, according to the outlet’s follow-up.
The Financial Services Commission said confirmed incidents now cover 16 financial companies, with approximately 100,000 leaked information records identified across the broader investigation. That total is not an exchange-only figure. Gopax’s operator Streami and Prabang were among five newly identified affected firms.
Prabang disclosed on October 9 that unauthorized access on October 2 exposed personal information belonging to about 20 customers. The leak involved 12 data fields, including names, birth dates and contact details. The exchange said it blocked the offending IP address and increased monitoring.
Gopax, one of South Korea’s five exchanges offering won trading, counts Binance as its largest shareholder. Prabang offers crypto-to-crypto trading. Both reported the incidents to authorities; Gopax said it would cooperate with the investigation and quickly update its security systems, while the full impact remained under review.
Korean exchanges must obtain Information Security Management System certification when registering with the Financial Intelligence Unit, whether they offer won or crypto-only markets. CoinScreamer’s recent registration coverage explains those requirements and the separate enforcement action against unregistered providers serving Korean customers.
