Key Notes
- Anthropic disclosed a roughly $627 million repurchase and resale of forfeited shares in October 2025.
- Business Insider reported that the proceeds from Ellison and Singh’s holdings went to the FTX bankruptcy estate.
- The near-$4 billion comparison assumes a $1.5 trillion Anthropic valuation rather than a confirmed IPO price.
The US government sold forfeited Anthropic shares for approximately $627 million in October 2025, according to the AI company’s newly public registration statement. The holding could be worth about $3.94 billion at a $1.5 trillion company valuation, a comparison reported by Business Insider rather than a confirmed stock-market price.
The shares were linked to former FTX executives Caroline Ellison and Nishad Singh. Their criminally forfeited investments were separate from the larger corporate stake sold through FTX’s bankruptcy proceedings.
A $627 Million Sale in October 2025
Anthropic’s October 26 S-1 filing records its repurchase of 4,453,900 Series B redeemable convertible preferred shares from the US government at $140.9676 per share. The company simultaneously resold them to nine accredited investors at the same price.
Anthropic received no net proceeds from the transactions. The disclosure does not name the former holders or the nine purchasers, and says the forfeiture arose from legal proceedings in which Anthropic was not a party.
Proceeds Went to the FTX Estate
Business Insider identified the holdings as those surrendered by Ellison and Singh. It reported that they originally invested a combined $50 million in Anthropic in 2022, before later pleading guilty in the FTX case.
The publication quoted a Justice Department spokesperson saying the sale proceeds were transferred to the FTX bankruptcy estate to compensate victims. Its corrected account distinguishes these assets from the estate’s separate Anthropic stock sale in 2024.
That establishes a reported destination for the money, not a new payment date or an additional entitlement for any individual creditor.
Nearly $4 Billion Is a Conditional Estimate
Business Insider estimated the former holding’s value at roughly $3.94 billion if Anthropic were valued at $1.5 trillion. That is about six times the historical sale proceeds; it does not mean the government realized a multibillion-dollar cash loss or that buyers have sold at that higher value.
Anthropic’s own IPO announcement says the proposed offering’s share count and price range have not been determined. The company intends to list on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the symbol ANT.
The filing documents a completed 2025 transaction. The near-$4 billion figure describes a possible later valuation of the holding, while its eventual public-market value remains unsettled.
