Key Notes

  • RLUSD is available through Coinbase Prime, Coinbase Exchange and the retail app, with 1:1 supported dollar conversions.
  • Deposits and withdrawals span XRP Ledger, Base and Ethereum, with Ripple planning liquidity on Base.
  • Coinbase Global Exchange access and RLUSD collateral support will follow, with no launch date announced.

Ripple and Coinbase have launched a partnership bringing Ripple USD (RLUSD) to Coinbase’s retail and institutional platforms, widening access to the dollar-backed stablecoin for trading, settlement and custody.

The October 28 announcement says clients can trade and manage RLUSD through Coinbase Prime, Coinbase Exchange and the Coinbase retail app starting today. Customers can convert US dollars and other supported dollar-denominated stablecoins into RLUSD at a 1:1 ratio.

Three Networks Connect RLUSD With Coinbase

Deposits and withdrawals are supported across the XRP Ledger, Base and Ethereum. Ripple also plans to provide liquidity on Base to support the stablecoin’s growth there.

The network support connects Coinbase balances with onchain transfers, giving users more than one route for moving RLUSD between platforms and blockchain applications. The release does not disclose the size of Ripple’s planned Base liquidity allocation.

RLUSD is designed to track the US dollar and is redeemable for dollars. Ripple describes its reserves as including dollar deposits, short-term US Treasuries and other cash equivalents. The stablecoin is a separate asset from XRP, the XRP Ledger’s native cryptocurrency.

Collateral Support Will Follow

The companies say RLUSD availability for Coinbase Global Exchange customers will come later, including the ability to use it as collateral. They have not supplied a launch date or detailed collateral terms for that phase.

Trading a token, safeguarding it and accepting it to support a trading obligation are different services. Today’s retail and institutional access should therefore be distinguished from the collateral capability still to be delivered.

Jack McDonald, Ripple’s senior vice president of stablecoins, framed the partnership around bringing execution, settlement and custody together for institutional users. Coinbase Institutional Co-CEO Brett Tejpaul described RLUSD as another payment option alongside those existing capabilities.

Another Distribution Channel for Ripple’s Dollar

The Coinbase agreement follows Ripple’s separate Robinhood partnership, announced a day earlier. That relationship includes RLUSD already live on Robinhood Chain and Bitstamp, with access through Robinhood’s retail app expected later this year.

Coinbase’s announcement establishes its own rollout, rather than bringing forward the timing of those Robinhood integrations. Each platform relationship has different live services and remaining commitments.

Ripple has also expanded the institutional infrastructure around RLUSD. Our custody report covered Standard Chartered’s live XRPL safekeeping service and a separate LMAX collateral arrangement that remained subject to implementation conditions.

Its recent treasury update addresses corporate cash management and an eligible-client returns program. The Coinbase listing does not itself announce a yield for RLUSD holders or make every Ripple treasury feature available to Coinbase customers.
