Citi Research Highlights Aave’s Role in Tokenized Collateral

Citi Research sees collateral mobility as a major tokenization use case, according to Aave, whose Horizon market lends against approved real-world assets.

Key Notes

  • Aave says Citi Research views collateral mobility as a major use case for tokenized finance.
  • Horizon allows qualified users to borrow stablecoins against issuer-approved real-world assets.
  • The research assessment does not disclose a Citi investment or commercial partnership with Aave.

Citi Research has highlighted Aave’s potential role in financing tokenized assets, according to a public summary shared by the lending protocol. The assessment identifies collateral mobility as one of tokenization’s most important potential uses.

Aave shared the research on October 19, describing its role as allowing collateral to be moved and deployed within tokenized capital markets. The project also linked to Citi’s note. The comments concern the protocol’s financial function; the announcement does not disclose a Citi investment or a commercial agreement with Aave.

From holding a tokenized fund to borrowing against it

Aave already operates a market built around that function. Horizon launched on Ethereum in August 2025, allowing institutions and other qualified users to pledge tokenized real-world assets and borrow stablecoins without first selling or redeeming their holdings.

The launch included fund collateral from Superstate and Centrifuge, spanning US Treasury exposure and other investment strategies. Borrowers can retain their investment position while obtaining liquidity, but they take on borrowing costs and the possibility of liquidation if the position no longer meets its collateral requirements.

Horizon separates the two sides of the market. Its documentation says collateral access is restricted to qualified participants approved by the relevant asset issuer. Stablecoin liquidity providers can supply USDC, RLUSD or GHO without the same issuer allowlisting requirements.

When an approved borrower deposits an asset, Horizon issues a non-transferable receipt token for the collateral position. This preserves the issuer’s restrictions rather than making a regulated fund freely transferable to any wallet. Loan-to-value limits and liquidation thresholds differ by collateral asset.

Collateral connects the asset and the funding

Citi’s separate October 13 collateral analysis describes a broader move toward programmable, round-the-clock financial infrastructure. It expects institutions to operate across traditional and digital systems for several years while connecting collateral inventories, custodians and settlement venues.

That puts the focus on what an asset can do after it has been issued as a token. A fund holding becomes more useful to a treasury team if it can support financing or meet a collateral obligation without a separate cash redemption.

The distinction also appears in BlackRock’s collateral strategy, which aims to extend existing digital-asset arrangements into traditional finance. Aave approaches the problem through onchain lending. Citi’s research assessment is about that infrastructure opportunity; Aave’s public summary provides no price target for the AAVE token.
