Franklin Templeton is expanding its digital asset strategy through the planned acquisition of 250 Digital, a spinoff from CoinFund. The deal will form the foundation of a new business unit called Franklin Crypto, aimed at delivering institutional-grade crypto investment solutions.

The acquisition includes 250 Digital’s investment team and its full suite of liquid cryptocurrency strategies, previously operated under CoinFund. As part of the agreement, Franklin Templeton will also allocate capital into these strategies, signaling a deeper commitment to actively managed crypto portfolios.

Leadership for the new division will include Christopher Perkins, with Seth Ginns serving as chief investment officer alongside Tony Pecore, a veteran within Franklin Templeton’s digital assets group. The move is designed to strengthen the firm’s capabilities in managing crypto investments for institutional clients, a segment that continues to grow despite broader market volatility.

The transaction also incorporates BENJI tokens, which represent ownership in the Franklin OnChain US Government Money Fund (FOBXX). This fund, launched in 2021, is one of the earliest examples of tokenized traditional financial products and reflects Franklin Templeton’s long-standing interest in blockchain-based finance.

The timing of the acquisition comes during a downturn in the crypto market, with Bitcoin still significantly below its 2025 peak. However, company executives view the market conditions as an opportunity rather than a setback.

The deal is expected to close in the second quarter of 2026, pending regulatory approvals and customary conditions. Once completed, Franklin Crypto will serve as a dedicated platform for institutional investors seeking exposure to digital assets, reinforcing the firm’s position as a major player in the evolving crypto investment landscape.
