Global cryptocurrency exchange Bitget has entered into a strategic cooperation agreement with the Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC) Authority to explore establishing a licensed local presence in Bhutan. The initiative marks a significant step for the exchange as it seeks an operational foothold within the Kingdom’s rapidly evolving digital finance landscape.

The newly signed framework allows Bitget to prepare an official application for a Financial Services License administered by the Gelephu Financial Services Office. GMC is a $100 billion autonomous special administrative region designed as an international financial and innovation hub. Backed in part by Bhutan’s national Bitcoin reserves, the vision behind GMC focuses on generating high-value careers across technology, green energy, finance, and holistic wellness.

Bitget CEO Gracy Chen highlighted that GMC is becoming a key center for digital finance, noting that the exchange looks forward to contributing technical infrastructure, market experience, and local talent development as the regional ecosystem develops. Under the agreement, Bitget plans to build out an on-ground presence in Bhutan, committing to local hiring, knowledge transfer, and regulatory collaboration.

The agreement follows other institutional developments in GMC, including the recent appointment of digital-asset manager 3iQ to oversee a strategic mandate tied to the region’s Bitcoin treasury. Powered by clean hydroelectricity and progressive regulatory frameworks, Bhutan continues to strengthen its position as a forward-looking sovereign destination for international digital asset institutions.
