Absa has announced an institutional digital asset custody service for South African clients, describing itself as the first African bank to bring the offering to market. The bank confirmed the launch in a September 28 statement.
The custody service covers safekeeping, administration and transfers of digital assets. It targets asset managers, non-bank financial institutions, corporates and treasury teams that need institutional controls. Absa said it is not currently a retail cryptocurrency offering.
The platform uses Ripple’s custody technology, following a partnership announced in October 2025. That agreement made Absa Ripple’s first major custody partner in Africa and set out plans to support cryptocurrencies and other tokenized assets through the bank’s infrastructure.
Absa says its offering combines digital asset technology with the governance, security, compliance and financial crime controls used in traditional custody. The move follows wider banking interest in the sector, including Citi’s plans to introduce Bitcoin custody through its Custody+ platform.
Absa is also exploring expansion into other African jurisdictions, depending on local regulatory frameworks and client demand. The bank views custody as a foundation for future services involving tokenization, digital securities, stablecoins and payments, extending its broader digital asset strategy beyond secure storage.
