Bitcoin Dips Below $81,000 as Crypto Liquidations Top $1.1B

Bitcoin recovered to about $81,545 after breaking below $81,000, while Ether stayed under $2,500 and 24-hour crypto liquidations topped $1.1 billion.

Key Notes

  • Bitcoin traded below $81,000 before recovering above the threshold, while Ether remained under $2,500 in the latest exchange snapshot.
  • CoinGlass recorded about $1.15 billion in 24-hour crypto liquidations, with long positions accounting for roughly $1.05 billion.
  • BNB, Solana and XRP joined the broad decline, trading below $750, $110 and $1.40 respectively at the latest check.

Bitcoin fell below $81,000 on October 8 as a broad cryptocurrency sell-off pushed Ether under $2,500 and forced more than $1.1 billion in leveraged positions to close over 24 hours. BNB, Solana, and XRP also traded below closely watched round-number levels.

By 19:03 UTC on October 8, Bitcoin had recovered to approximately $81,545, while Ether changed hands near $2,451. The rebound left BTC above the $81,000 threshold it had breached earlier, but both assets remained lower over the rolling 24-hour period.

Bitcoin Trades Below $81,000 Before Recovering

Coinbase’s market data recorded a Bitcoin low of $80,314.70, against a rolling 24-hour high of $83,567.58. Its one-minute trading history places the low in the interval beginning at 17:26 UTC.

The fall between that high and low amounted to approximately 3.9%. That measures the span of the trading range; Bitcoin’s latest price was down about 2.2% from the exchange’s rolling 24-hour opening price.

Ether’s decline was deeper on the same measure, at roughly 4.6%. Coinbase’s ETH/USD figures showed a 24-hour low of $2,404.60 and a high of $2,585.67. Its recovery from the low still left it below $2,500 at the latest check.

BNB, Solana and XRP Join the Sell-Off

The weakness extended beyond the two largest cryptocurrencies. Solana remained below $110 and XRP below $1.40, while BNB traded below $750 on Binance’s dollar-tether market. The simultaneous declines show that the move affected several major assets rather than a single token.

The following snapshot uses Coinbase’s dollar markets for BTC, ETH, SOL and XRP, and Binance’s BNB/USDT market. Percentage changes compare each price with its venue’s rolling 24-hour opening value, rather than a common midnight close.

Asset Market Latest price 24-hour change
Bitcoin (BTC) BTC/USD $81,545.02 -2.21%
Ether (ETH) ETH/USD $2,451.46 -4.59%
BNB (BNB) BNB/USDT 728.72 USDT -5.65%
Solana (SOL) SOL/USD $108.57 -6.26%
XRP (XRP) XRP/USD $1.3630 -3.86%
Prices checked at 19:03 UTC on October 8. BNB is quoted in USDT; the other markets are quoted in US dollars.

Prices can differ between exchanges because each market has its own order book. The snapshot draws on Coinbase’s trade feed and corresponding asset markets, together with Binance’s BNB data.

Long Positions Bear Most of the Liquidations

CoinGlass’s liquidation dashboard showed approximately $1.15 billion in forced closures over 24 hours at 19:01 UTC. Long positions accounted for about $1.05 billion, compared with $96.6 million in shorts, putting most of the losses on traders positioned for higher prices.

The four-hour total stood near $773 million, including approximately $716 million in longs. Those figures describe the entire tracked derivatives market, rather than Bitcoin alone.

These are rolling windows, so a sharp burst of liquidations can leave the latest one-hour reading while remaining inside the four-hour and daily totals. The windows overlap and should not be added together.

A liquidation closes a leveraged position when its collateral no longer meets the venue’s requirements. The reported value measures positions forcibly closed, rather than an equivalent amount of cash leaving crypto or a loss of market capitalization.

A Sharp Reversal From the $87,000 Retest

The drop follows Bitcoin’s $87,000 retest earlier this week. Coinbase recorded a high of $86,996 on October 5, before the advance lost momentum. Thursday’s low was roughly 7.7% below that Monday peak.

That earlier recovery had itself followed a volatile October 2 session. The latest move therefore extends a week of reversals, with the market moving away from the upper end of its recent range despite intermittent rebounds.

CoinScreamer’s review of Bitcoin’s October record found gains in 10 of the 13 completed years from 2013 through 2025. That monthly history does not rule out substantial intramonth declines or determine where October 2026 will finish.

At the latest check, Bitcoin had regained $81,000 while Ether, BNB, Solana and XRP remained below the levels breached during the sell-off. The rebound and the liquidation totals capture different parts of the same volatile session; neither establishes that the selling has ended.
