Key Notes

  • Bitcoin fell to $80,125 and Ether to $2,313 on Coinbase during the trading hour beginning at 02:00 UTC on October 15.
  • Both assets recovered from their overnight lows while remaining below their rolling 24-hour opening prices.
  • The decline followed September US inflation data, with annual headline CPI at 3.7% and core inflation at 2.6%.

Bitcoin fell below $81,000 and Ether dropped under $2,400 on Thursday, October 15, as the cryptocurrency market extended its losses following Wednesday’s US inflation release. Both assets subsequently recovered from their overnight lows, although they remained down over 24 hours.

At 07:32 UTC, Bitcoin had recovered above $81,000, trading at $81,031.95 on Coinbase. Ether remained below $2,400 at $2,365.55. Those prices represent declines of 2.94% and 5.70%, respectively, against the exchange’s rolling 24-hour opening values.

The rebound changes the immediate price picture without erasing the sell-off. Coinbase recorded Thursday lows of $80,125 for BTC and $2,313.07 for ETH, leaving Ether with the larger percentage loss over the latest 24-hour comparison.

Overnight Lows Came in the Same Trading Hour

Coinbase’s hourly trading history places both lows in the interval beginning at 02:00 UTC. Bitcoin’s candle opened near $81,540, fell to $80,125 and closed around $81,416, showing a sharp drop and partial recovery within that hour.

Ether opened the same hour near $2,411, reached $2,313.07 and closed around $2,377. Its price stayed below the $2,400 threshold through the following completed hourly candles.

A separate check of Kraken data also confirmed Thursday lows below both levels. Small differences between venues reflect separate order books; they do not change the direction of the move.

The latest Coinbase prices put Bitcoin approximately 1.13% above its overnight low and Ether 2.27% above its own. A rebound from the trough and a negative 24-hour return measure different starting points and can occur together.

Solana and XRP Also Trade Lower

The pressure extended beyond the two largest cryptocurrencies. Solana traded at $102.06, down 4.93% on the same comparison, while XRP was $1.3040, lower by 4.93%.

Asset Latest price 24-hour change
Bitcoin (BTC) $81,031.95 -2.94%
Ether (ETH) $2,365.55 -5.70%
Solana (SOL) $102.06 -4.93%
XRP $1.3040 -4.93%

Inflation Keeps the Policy Backdrop in Focus

The move followed the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ September CPI release on Wednesday. Consumer prices increased 0.6% over the month and 3.7% over the year, compared with an annual rate of 3.4% in August.

Excluding food and energy, prices rose 0.3% during September and 2.6% over 12 months. The annual core rate increased from 2.4%, while the monthly core increase matched August’s pace.

The BLS said gasoline accounted for more than half of the monthly headline increase. That separates the energy contribution to the overall reading from the narrower measure excluding food and energy.

Interest rates and fund demand were already central to Wintermute’s outlook, which identified stable long-term Treasury yields and returning spot ETF inflows as conditions for a sustained recovery. That assessment predates the latest price snapshot and does not establish a single cause for Thursday’s trading.

A Volatile October Continues

CoinScreamer covered a separate October 13 rebound, when Bitcoin recovered above $83,000 after slipping below $81,000. Thursday’s $80,125 Coinbase low was below the $80,927.48 recorded in that earlier episode.

US spot funds also attracted a combined $200.46 million on October 13, as our ETF report detailed. Those are dated session flows, rather than a reading of demand during the current sell-off.

At the latest check, both cryptocurrencies had recouped part of the overnight decline, but their prices remained below the prior 24-hour opening levels. Bitcoin’s position around $81,000 and Ether’s distance from $2,400 therefore describe an incomplete recovery, rather than a return to Wednesday morning’s prices.
