Key Notes

  • Tether reports $1.5 billion in Q3 net operating profit and $4.5 billion for the first nine months.
  • Reserve assets of $191.45 billion exceeded liabilities by $7.95 billion at September 30.
  • BDO’s assurance covers the quarter-end report, while operating profit differs from its separate financial-result measure.

Tether reported $1.5 billion in net operating profit for the third quarter of 2026, bringing the first nine months’ total to $4.5 billion. The USDT issuer said its excess reserve buffer nearly doubled from the previous quarter to $7.95 billion.

The October 30 announcement accompanies BDO’s reasonable-assurance opinion on Tether International’s financial figures and reserves at September 30. The quarterly earnings headline refers to net operating profit, a measure that should be distinguished from the broader financial result presented in the report.

Reserves Exceed Liabilities by $7.95 Billion

The Financial Figures and Reserves Report gives the following quarter-end balances:

  • Total reserve assets: $191.45 billion.
  • Total liabilities: $183.50 billion.
  • Liabilities relating to issued digital tokens: $183.47 billion.
  • Assets above total liabilities: $7.95 billion.

Tether compared that buffer with $4.1 billion at the end of Q2, an increase of roughly $3.85 billion, or 94%. This is a balance-sheet cushion, rather than an additional quarterly profit figure. It should not be added to the $1.5 billion operating result.

The company said USDT issuance remained broadly stable around $184 billion across the first three quarters. Its operating earnings therefore continued despite little change in that rounded issuance figure, with the latest quarterly result consistent with Q2.

Treasury Bills and Repos Drive Income

Tether said US Treasury bills and reverse repurchase agreements supplied most operating income. It put direct and indirect Treasury-bill holdings at $132.4 billion; that combined exposure is different from the directly held Treasury-bill line in the reserve breakdown.

The report lists $122.84 billion in direct US Treasury bills and $139.58 billion across cash, cash equivalents and other short-term deposits. Other holdings include $19.08 billion in gold, $8.37 billion in Bitcoin and $14.18 billion in secured loans.

A reserve total is an asset valuation, not a cash balance. The distinction matters because short-term government securities, gold, Bitcoin and loans have different liquidity and market-risk characteristics. A larger excess buffer gives more room to absorb losses, but does not make every component interchangeable with immediately available dollars.

Operating Profit Is Not the Whole Financial Result

The report’s separate change-in-equity table shows a $1.66 billion financial result for the nine months and negative $519 million in net capital movements. Those figures differ from Tether’s $4.5 billion year-to-date net operating-profit announcement. Neither the measures nor their periods should be interchanged.

The release does not provide a line-by-line reconciliation between the operating-profit headline and that financial-result figure. It also does not establish that the entire quarterly increase in the excess reserve buffer came from Q3 operating income alone.

What BDO’s Assurance Covers

BDO concluded that the report was fairly presented, in all material respects, under its stated criteria. The opinion covers September 30 at a point in time, not other dates. The report is not the company’s financial statements, and its additional notes sit outside the assurance scope.

The reporting date is particularly relevant amid the current security news: this September snapshot predates the October 29 Binance hack. It cannot establish the later incident’s effects. CoinScreamer’s Tether freeze report concerns restrictions on tokens at particular addresses, a separate matter from the composition and value of Tether’s reserves.

The earnings release also illustrates the business model behind dollar stablecoins: an issuer can generate income from reserve investments while demand for its tokens stays broadly steady. Our coverage of BIS research on stablecoins and bank deposits examines the wider competition for those balances.
