Bitcoin has crossed the 80,000-block countdown milestone ahead of its next halving. Block 970,000 was mined on October 5 at 10:45 UTC, leaving exactly 80,000 blocks until the event. A subsequent chain check at 11:09 UTC showed height 970,005, with 79,995 blocks remaining.

The fifth halving will take place at block 1,050,000, reducing the mining subsidy from 3.125 BTC to 1.5625 BTC per block. Bitcoin’s consensus rules set a halving interval of 210,000 blocks, following the most recent reduction at block 840,000 in April 2024.

At the network’s target pace of one block every ten minutes, the remaining distance represents roughly 556 days, pointing to April 2028. Bitcoin.org’s halving guide explains that the block height is fixed, while the calendar date shifts with the actual pace of mining.

At that target pace, new issuance would fall from around 450 BTC to 225 BTC per day. Those figures describe newly created bitcoin rather than total miner revenue: miners also collect transaction fees, which are not automatically halved by the subsidy change.

The milestone tracks Bitcoin’s supply schedule rather than a guaranteed price outcome. Market participants continue to debate how closely prices follow halving cycles. Bitwise CIO Matt Hougan has argued that institutional participation and changing macroeconomic conditions are weakening the traditional four-year market pattern.
