Bitcoin briefly climbed above $87,000 on Coinbase after Friday’s U.S. jobs report, reaching about $87,249 during the minute beginning at 12:31 UTC, according to the exchange’s price data. The move followed the release of September employment figures at 12:30 UTC.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported a seasonally adjusted gain of 29,000 nonfarm jobs, while unemployment rose from 4.1% to 4.2%. Economists surveyed by Dow Jones had expected 84,000 jobs and 4.1% unemployment, MarketSpeaker reported.

Revisions also weakened the preceding months. July’s payroll change was lowered from a gain of 21,000 to a loss of 10,000, while August’s increase was cut from 162,000 to 133,000. Combined employment for those two months was revised down by 60,000.

Average hourly earnings for private-sector employees rose 0.1% in September to $37.81, with annual growth of 3.0%. The average workweek held at 34.4 hours. Hiring and wage figures provide further context for investors assessing the Federal Reserve’s interest-rate outlook.

The Bitcoin advance was short-lived. Coinbase’s trade feed showed about $86,817 at 12:39 UTC. It followed Friday’s earlier rally above $86,500, which CoinScreamer covered before the jobs release. Both price snapshots refer to Coinbase’s dollar market.
