Germany’s Sparkassen have begun offering Bitcoin, Ether, XRP, Solana and Polygon trading inside their banking app, bringing retail crypto access to the savings banks at the heart of what their umbrella association describes as Europe’s largest banking group.
The DekaBank-powered service launched on October 19 at participating institutions. It is a gradual rollout across independently operated savings banks, with each Sparkasse deciding whether to join. Customers of banks that have not adopted the service cannot yet use it.
DekaBank’s launch announcement names five supported assets: BTC, ETH, XRP, SOL and POL. The offering puts buying and selling alongside familiar banking functions, rather than requiring customers to trade through a separate exchange app.
Crypto trading within the Sparkasse app
The product, called “Krypto – powered by Deka,” is accessed through the app’s “Anlegen” investment section. Eligible customers with a current account at a participating Sparkasse open a separate crypto account with DekaBank to use it.
According to Deka’s product information, customers make their own investment decisions: the Sparkasse does not provide advice on individual crypto purchases. Trading is available nearly around the clock, subject to maintenance and other technical limitations.
The launch announcement lists a €0.99 charge per order. The Defiant reports that a spread also applies, so the order fee should not be read as the entire cost of a trade.
DekaBank handles custody and holds customers’ private keys in a jointly managed wallet. Transfers are limited to addresses at selected crypto-asset service providers; customers cannot withdraw to any wallet address of their choosing. Crypto holdings are not covered by statutory deposit insurance.
More banks expected to join each month
The German Savings Banks Association, DSGV, told dpa that another 30–40 institutions are expected to join each month, according to Deutschlandfunk’s report. That expansion remains a plan, rather than confirmation that the entire network will offer the product on a fixed date.
DSGV’s official figures list 339 Sparkassen as of January 1, 2026. The wider Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe also includes Landesbanken, DekaBank, insurers and other institutions. Its scale gives the launch a potentially substantial distribution channel, even though availability currently depends on the customer’s own savings bank.
The rollout marks a change from the network’s earlier reluctance to offer crypto trading, when volatility and investment risks were central objections. The new model provides access while keeping the service self-directed and placing trading and custody with DekaBank.
It also adds to the shift toward crypto services within established financial institutions. CoinScreamer recently covered Charles Schwab’s completed Bitcoin and Ether retail rollout. In Germany, Deutsche Bank’s planned custody launch targets institutional clients, a different market from the Sparkassen app’s retail offering.
