Key Notes
- Petrobras is researching two Cardano applications for lower-carbon fuel records.
- The SAF platform tracks and retires tokenized attributes to prevent duplicate claims.
- The Diesel R model remains proposed, with no wider rollout timetable disclosed.
Petrobras, Brazil’s state-controlled energy company, is testing Cardano in two research projects aimed at making lower-carbon fuel claims easier to verify. One tracks the environmental attributes of sustainable aviation fuel, while the other examines the supply chain for Diesel R, a diesel product containing renewable material.
The aviation application is detailed in a Cardano Foundation case study. CoinDesk reported the two-project announcement on September 30, citing material shared by the foundation. Both remain research initiatives, with no disclosed fuel volumes or timetable for wider deployment.
Aviation Fuel Claims Become Traceable Tokens
The SAF project was developed with PUC-Rio University’s Ledger Labs and the Cardano Foundation. Its CS-SAF platform represents fuel sustainability attributes as tokens carrying metadata aligned with CORSIA, the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation.
The application supports book-and-claim accounting, which separates a fuel’s environmental attributes from its physical delivery. An airline can acquire the associated benefit even when the fuel is used elsewhere. A reliable ownership record is needed to keep multiple parties from claiming the same emissions reduction.
The foundation describes a sequence in which certificates are validated, tokenized and allocated to airlines or passenger journeys. Once a claim is used, its token is permanently retired. A passenger-facing application can also issue a certificate connecting an individual allocation to the underlying fuel record.
Petrobras’ own fuel description says its SAF combines conventional aviation kerosene with a renewable fraction and can use existing aircraft and airport infrastructure. The blockchain project concerns the accounting and verification of those attributes, rather than a new method of producing the fuel.
Diesel R Research Follows the Supply Chain
The second project proposes linking records from fuel production, transportation and use into a shared history. According to CoinDesk’s report, that could support Scope 3 emissions reporting, which covers indirect emissions across a company’s value chain and often depends on information held by suppliers and customers.
Petrobras describes Diesel R as a co-processed fuel combining petroleum diesel with renewable inputs such as vegetable oils or animal fats. Its renewable share can vary between products. Tracking that composition matters when customers calculate the environmental attributes associated with a particular supply.
The diesel model remains proposed. The research does not establish that Petrobras has moved its commercial fuel supply chain onto Cardano, and the announcement does not quantify an emissions reduction achieved through blockchain use.
From Employee Training to Industrial Research
The relationship predates these fuel applications. In December 2023, the Cardano Foundation announced an education partnership with Petrobras, making blockchain training available through Petrobras University. The stated aim included helping employees explore uses for the technology in the energy sector.
The fuel projects extend that work into verifiable records. CoinScreamer has also covered blockchain-based digital credentials in the UAE, another application centered on checking the origin and authenticity of information.
For Petrobras, the distinction between recording a claim and proving its underlying environmental benefit remains important. The SAF workflow begins with certificate validation before token creation. A permanent transaction history can preserve that evidence and track its use, but the reliability of the claim still depends on the certification and data supplied to the system.
