JPMorgan adds Ethereum alongside Base for its JPMD deposit token, giving approved institutional clients another network for payments and settlement.

Key Notes

  • JPMorgan is adding Ethereum to the public networks supported by its JPMD bank deposit token.
  • Only approved institutional counterparties can participate, despite the use of public blockchain infrastructure.
  • Round-the-clock token transfers are distinct from legacy bank-account funding, which has a disclosed Saturday downtime window.

JPMorgan is bringing JPM Coin to Ethereum, adding another public blockchain for institutional clients to move dollar deposits around the clock. The expansion puts the bank’s deposit token, identified by the ticker JPMD, alongside a larger pool of tokenized assets and onchain liquidity.

Kinexys, JPMorgan’s blockchain business, announced the move in a statement shared with The Block on October 19. The outlet reported that JPMD now supports peer-to-peer transfers in the Ethereum Virtual Machine ecosystem, including Base and Ethereum.

A bank deposit, delivered onchain

JPM Coin represents commercial bank deposits in token form. It is distinct from a public stablecoin issued against a separate pool of reserves: clients are moving bank money through blockchain infrastructure, with the associated bank credit exposure.

The bank’s product documentation describes access for approved counterparties, subject to onboarding and geographic availability. Using a public network does not make JPMD a permissionless retail token that anyone can buy or send.

Clients use a Blockchain Deposit Account to convert dollars into tokens and redeem them back into bank money. The stated uses include payments, collateral and securities settlement, with programmable transfers that can respond to agreed conditions.

JPMorgan made JPM Coin available on Base in November 2025, following a proof of concept involving B2C2, Coinbase and Mastercard. Base is an Ethereum layer-2 network. The latest announcement extends that public-chain strategy to Ethereum itself; it does not replace the earlier Base deployment.

Where the 24/7 promise applies

JPMorgan describes transfers within the token network as available 24 hours a day, every day, with near-real-time settlement. Its published terms separately disclose a three-hour Saturday downtime window for moving funds between traditional demand deposit accounts and Blockchain Deposit Accounts on legacy systems.

That distinction matters for a treasury team planning weekend payments. Moving tokenized deposits between eligible counterparties and bringing money onto or off the network are separate steps, even when they form part of the same payment workflow.

The product page still describes Base. The Ethereum expansion is reported in the bank’s October 19 statement, rather than an updated technical deployment guide on that page. The report does not provide a token contract address or explain a cross-chain bridge mechanism.

Another cash option for tokenized markets

Kinexys cited Ethereum’s liquidity and tokenized-asset ecosystem as reasons for the expansion. The bank also said the wider Kinexys platform has processed more than $4 trillion cumulatively and averages $7 billion in daily transactions. Those figures cover the platform, not JPMD activity on Ethereum alone.

The move adds context to the debate over where digital dollars sit in the financial system. A recent BIS study examined competition between stablecoins and bank deposits. JPM Coin takes a different approach: retaining the commercial bank deposit while changing the infrastructure used to transfer it.
