Gen Z retail investors are increasingly leaning toward exchange-traded funds (ETFs) while demonstrating disciplined trading habits compared to older generations, according to new data published by Binance Research on August 14, 2026. The analysis evaluated trading behavior across direct equities, tokenized stocks, and traditional finance (TradFi) perpetual contracts, comparing Gen Z user metrics against Millennials, Gen X, and Baby Boomers.
By early August, ETFs represented 25% of Gen Z’s total equity trading volume. Net equity inflows into ETFs among younger traders rose from 18.5% in June to 21.9% in July, while the allocation to individual stocks contracted to 74.2%. Broadcom, Tesla, and the Schwab US Dividend Equity ETF emerged as top purchases among buy-only accounts.
The research also highlighted distinct behavioral trends regarding activity levels and leverage. Gen Z averaged 13 monthly trades in TradFi perpetuals, visibly lower than the 17 trades logged by Millennials and 16.5 by Gen X. Furthermore, 88.2% of Gen Z perpetual accounts avoided leveraged and inverse ETFs entirely. Demonstrating a buy-and-hold mindset, 22% of Gen Z direct-equity accounts have never placed a sell order, outstripping Gen X (19%) and Baby Boomers (9%).
Separately, Binance’s recently launched tokenized stock platform, bStocks, briefly claimed the position of second-largest issuer with $610.6 million in value, closely competing with Kraken’s xStocks ($610.7 million) in a broader tokenized equity market currently valued at roughly $2.7 billion.
