Circle Internet Group Inc (NYSE: CRCL) has acquired fundamental assets from IBM’s blockchain patent portfolio. The deal establishes Circle as the primary holder of blockchain patents in the United States, expanding its intellectual property moat as it scales enterprise financial rails.
The acquired intellectual property comprises over 680 patent families and nearly 1,000 issued patents across global jurisdictions. The portfolio covers core blockchain mechanics, financial settlement rails, banking, insurance, enterprise infrastructure, supply chain verification, and cloud security architecture. Rather than acting solely as a defensive IP shield, Circle stated that the assets will directly support its suite of financial products, including its USDC stablecoin ecosystem, Circle Payments Network, the enterprise-focused Arc blockchain, and autonomous agentic finance tools.
Beyond the asset transfer, Circle and IBM confirmed plans to explore further commercial opportunities together. General Counsel Sarah Wilson emphasized that securing foundational innovation from an early enterprise pioneer like IBM expands Circle’s capacity to build scalable, internet-native financial infrastructure. The acquisition represents a strategic shift for Circle as it secures long-term IP dominance to support institutional digital asset adoption.
