The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) has hit a major milestone in digital financial infrastructure. Project Agorá successfully wrapped up real-value testing of tokenized wholesale cross-border payments, marking a critical step forward for institutional blockchain adoption. Across 17 distinct transaction scenarios, 28 participating financial institutions and central banks successfully settled 800,000 Swiss francs, equivalent to roughly $1 million.

High-Speed Multi-Currency Settlements

The July trials leveraged a novel combination of tokenized central bank reserves and commercial bank deposits. The test spanned six major global currencies: Swiss francs, euros, British pounds, Japanese yen, South Korean won, and US dollars.

One of the most notable technical achievements of the trial was execution speed. The infrastructure achieved an average settlement time of just about 80 seconds per transaction. This rapid turnaround highlights the immense efficiency gains tokenization can offer over legacy correspondent banking networks, which often take days to clear international transfers. In May, the project’s prototype had already demonstrated atomic settlement capabilities across multiple jurisdictions, but these latest tests validate the model under real-value operating conditions.

Coalition of Central and Commercial Heavyweights

Project Agorá stands out due to its broad public-private sector collaboration, bringing together an elite group of institutional stakeholders. Participating sovereign institutions included the Bank of England, the Bank of France, the Bank of Japan, the Bank of Korea, and the Swiss National Bank.

Alongside these central banks, a powerful roster of global commercial banking giants took part in the testing phase. Major participants featured JPMorgan Chase, Citi, Deutsche Bank, BNP Paribas, UBS, Standard Chartered, and MUFG. This deep integration between central bank money and tokenized commercial bank deposits demonstrates a scalable architecture for future global liquidity management.

Road Ahead for Project Agorá

Originally launched in 2024, Project Agorá was designed to explore how tokenized commercial bank deposits and central bank reserves can fundamentally eliminate the structural frictions plaguing cross-border wholesale payments, such as high costs, operational silos, and delayed clearing times.

The BIS noted that the July live testing marked an important milestone in the initiative’s roadmap. As institutional appetite for tokenized assets and digital currency solutions accelerates, Project Agorá will continue its rigorous testing phase. Future iterations are expected to expand transaction scopes, scale participant onboarding, and further refine the legal and regulatory frameworks governing multi-currency tokenized settlements.
