Solana’s Alpenglow consensus upgrade is scheduled for mainnet-beta on October 21 at approximately 14:50 UTC, Anza announced on October 13. The upgrade targets finality of roughly 150 milliseconds compared with the 12.8-second benchmark cited for the current TowerBFT consensus system.

The Solana Foundation’s upgrade guide places activation in epoch 1064, with timing estimates subject to the network’s progress. The first phase introduces Votor, replacing on-chain vote transactions with messages exchanged directly between validators. Blocks can become final after one or two voting rounds, freeing blockspace previously occupied by consensus votes.

Finality describes when a transaction becomes irreversible, rather than how frequently new blocks can be produced. It is separate from Solana’s 200ms slot upgrade, which completed its mainnet rollout on October 9. The 150ms figure is an expected result, not a fixed guarantee for every transaction.

Ordinary wallet users do not need to migrate assets or change how they sign transactions. Validators must prepare compatible Agave-based software and fund the new admission fee, while indexers and data providers need to accommodate changes to block contents and streaming interfaces before the switch.

Testnet and devnet migrations are already marked complete, but mainnet has yet to activate Alpenglow. The rollout initially changes voting and finalization; Rotor, a separate component intended to improve block-data distribution, remains planned for a later release rather than being part of the October 21 launch.
