Patrick Witt has left his role leading the White House crypto council after his temporary government assignment expired. A White House official confirmed the end of his assignment in an email to The Block, which reported the departure on October 14.
Witt served as executive director of the President’s Council of Advisors for Digital Assets and was a Defense Department employee temporarily assigned to the White House. The administration thanked him for his service. Its explanation centers on the assignment ending, rather than announcing a resignation.
He had helped lead negotiations over the CLARITY Act, the proposed framework for US crypto market regulation. The legislation remains stalled in the Senate after an initial procedural vote failed last month, with stablecoin rewards and ethics provisions concerning elected officials’ crypto interests among the disputed issues.
The departure follows other changes in the administration’s digital-asset team. David Sacks left his White House crypto and AI post in March after his special-government-employee term ended, while deputy crypto council director Harry Jung departed in July. The White House did not identify Witt’s replacement in its response.
CoinScreamer recently covered Witt’s reserve comments about exploring budget-neutral ways to expand the government’s Bitcoin holdings. Those remarks came from an October 6 interview shared more widely on October 14; they described options under review, without announcing completed purchases or a finalized acquisition program.
