Meta Platforms will shut down virtual reality support for Horizon Worlds in June, marking a strategic shift away from the VR-first metaverse vision the company introduced in 2021. The platform will transition toward a mobile-focused experience as Meta repositions its broader digital ecosystem.

Starting June 15, users will no longer be able to access Horizon Worlds through Meta Quest headsets or create and publish new virtual reality environments. The company said development efforts will instead prioritize mobile access, which executives believe offers broader user adoption. The pivot reflects growing competition from cross-platform gaming environments such as Fortnite and Roblox, which reach significantly larger audiences across mobile, PC, and consoles.

The move also follows continued financial pressure from Meta’s Reality Labs division, which has accumulated nearly $80 billion in losses since 2020. As the company increases spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure and augmented reality devices, executives appear to be scaling back earlier metaverse ambitions.
