Ben Delo has pledged 20 million pounds, approximately $27 million, to the London Institute for Mathematical Sciences, marking one of the larger private research donations in the UK outside Oxford and Cambridge. The commitment includes an upfront payment and a matching component contingent on additional fundraising, forming part of a broader endowment campaign.

Delo co-founded BitMEX in 2014. In 2022, he pleaded guilty to US banking violations and paid a $10 million fine. He later received a presidential pardon from Donald Trump in 2025. The donation follows his earlier philanthropic support for mathematics and scientific research initiatives.

The institute focuses on theoretical physics, pure mathematics and artificial intelligence, operating under a research-only model without teaching obligations. The pledge comes as digital asset industry figures continue expanding into academic and policy philanthropy, even as regulatory scrutiny of crypto executives remains a defining theme across major jurisdictions.
