Coinbase has introduced stock perpetual futures for non-US traders, marking a significant step in its ambition to become a global “everything exchange” offering round-the-clock access to multiple asset classes.

The new product enables users to trade perpetual futures tied to major US equities and indices, including Apple and Nvidia, in a format familiar to crypto-native traders. These contracts are leveraged and cash-settled, allowing exposure to price movements without owning the underlying shares.

Expanding 24/7 Multi-Asset Trading

Coinbase said the offering is currently limited to eligible non-US customers, though it plans to expand availability to additional regions over time. Retail traders can access the contracts through Coinbase Advanced, while institutional users can trade via Coinbase International Exchange.

The move reflects a broader strategy to merge crypto and traditional financial markets into a unified trading experience. Coinbase has already rolled out regulated crypto futures, extended-hours equities trading in the US, and prediction markets powered by Kalshi.

By adding stock perpetuals, the platform is pushing closer to its goal of enabling seamless switching between cryptocurrencies, equities, commodities, and event-based contracts, all within a single interface.

Europe and Regulatory Strategy

In Europe, Coinbase has already launched perpetual futures products across 26 countries under its Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (MiFID) framework. This regulatory structure allows the company to offer derivatives products while maintaining compliance with regional financial laws.

The emphasis on non-US markets highlights ongoing regulatory constraints domestically, where derivatives tied to equities face stricter oversight. Expanding internationally gives Coinbase room to innovate while navigating complex compliance requirements.

Rising Competition in Synthetic Equities

Coinbase is entering a fast-growing but competitive segment of the market. Rival platforms such as Binance and Kraken already offer similar products, including tokenized equities and perpetual futures tied to stocks.

Interest in these instruments has surged alongside the growth of tokenized real-world assets (RWAs), which recently surpassed $1 billion in onchain value. These products appeal to traders seeking 24/7 access, leverage, and global reach. These are features not typically available in traditional equity markets.

Toward the “Everything Exchange”

The launch aligns with CEO Brian Armstrong’s vision of building a global trading platform that spans crypto, equities, and beyond. Central to this strategy are stablecoins, Coinbase’s Base blockchain, and a multi-asset brokerage model.

As financial markets continue to converge, Coinbase’s expansion into stock perpetual futures underscores a broader industry trend: the blending of traditional finance with crypto-native infrastructure, reshaping how investors access and trade assets worldwide.
