Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong is countering arguments that the rise of artificial intelligence diminishes the relevance of crypto. Taking to X, Armstrong outlined his vision for agentic finance (AiFi), arguing that autonomous software agents will inherently rely on open, programmable blockchain infrastructure rather than legacy banking rails to conduct business.
“AI being a megatrend takes nothing away from crypto,” Armstrong stated, emphasizing that autonomous AI entities require borderless, instant settlement layers to interact within the digital economy. “If anything, it makes crypto more important.”
Rather than viewing AI as a competing narrative, major blockchain firms are increasingly positioning Layer-2 networks and stablecoin rails as the primary payment infrastructure for machine-to-machine commerce.
Inside Coinbase’s AiFi Tech Stack: Base, USDC, and x402
Coinbase’s strategy for agentic payments relies on a cohesive three-part technology stack designed to enable seamless, human-free transaction flows:
- Base Layer-2. Launched in 2023, the low-cost Ethereum Layer-2 network serves as the scalable execution environment for rapid, low-fee microtransactions.
- Circle’s USDC. The fully backed dollar stablecoin serves as the default liquid unit of account, enabling software systems to transact without volatility risks.
- x402 protocol. Introduced as an open standard built on the HTTP 402 Payment Required status code, x402 enables software programs and AI agents to pay for API access, computational resources, and raw data programmatically, completely bypassing credit cards and manual checkout forms.
Together, these technologies allow autonomous algorithms to subscribe to services, procure computing power, and trade data continuously without human intervention.
On-Chain Agentic Activity Surpasses 100 Million Transactions
The agentic finance narrative is already producing tangible on-chain metrics. According to data from blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis, automated payments conducted on Base via the x402 protocol officially surpassed 100 million transactions.
Chainalysis noted that transactions valued at $1 or more accounted for 95% of total value transferred across x402 rails. Forensic analysis revealed that agentic payment wallets exhibit unique behavioral signatures: they tend to be newer, hold a broader variety of tokenized assets, and carry lower average cash balances compared to traditional human-operated wallets on Base.
As Coinbase prepares to release its Q2 financial results, the rapid expansion of machine-driven transaction volume underscores how AI agent activity could become a major structural driver of on-chain network usage and stablecoin velocity in the coming years.
