Major technology firms, including Google and Microsoft, have joined forces to support the newly launched x402 Foundation, an initiative aimed at standardizing how artificial intelligence systems handle payments across crypto and traditional financial networks. The project was introduced by the Linux Foundation in collaboration with Coinbase, placing the x402 protocol under an open-source, nonprofit governance model.

The foundation has attracted backing from a wide range of companies spanning finance, blockchain, and infrastructure. These include Amazon Web Services, Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, and American Express, alongside crypto-focused entities like Circle and Solana Foundation. The broad coalition highlights growing industry interest in building interoperable payment systems for AI-driven applications.

At its core, the x402 protocol is designed as an open standard that enables AI agents and web services to execute transactions autonomously. These payments could include purchasing data, accessing APIs, or paying for digital services without direct human involvement. Supporters argue that placing the protocol under the Linux Foundation ensures neutrality and encourages wider adoption, similar to how open standards helped shape the early internet.

Industry leaders believe machine-to-machine transactions could soon dominate digital payments. Brian Armstrong has suggested that AI agents may soon outnumber humans in online transactions, while Jeremy Allaire has projected billions of AI agents operating on blockchain networks within a few years. Changpeng Zhao has also described cryptocurrency as a natural payment layer for autonomous systems.
