London Stock Exchange Plans Overnight Trading Platform Launch for 2027 to Counter Crypto Competition

To counter growing competition from 24/7 crypto venues and tokenized asset platforms, the London Stock Exchange is preparing a dedicated night-trading venue for 2027.

The London Stock Exchange (LSE) is planning to launch a dedicated night-time trading venue in the first half of 2027. The move places the UK operator alongside a growing roster of global traditional exchanges expanding toward round-the-clock operations to retain order flow in an increasingly continuous financial landscape.

The planned overnight platform will function independently from the LSE’s main exchange. The new venue is scheduled to operate from 5:00 p.m. to 7:50 a.m. London time, leaving the primary market to maintain its standard trading window of 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. At launch, the venue will focus on exchange-traded products (ETPs), specifically instruments tracking major UK and US stock market benchmarks.

LSE Chief Executive Julia Hoggett stated that the initiative responds to expanding appetite from international retail investors, particularly across Asian time zones, seeking continuous exposure to UK and global assets. Traditional market operators face heightened pressure from 24/7 digital asset platforms and tokenized equity venues that have normalized constant market access. By leveraging London’s geographical time zone, the exchange aims to capture off-hours retail volume while keeping its core market clearing and settlement processes intact.
