Crypto exchange Gate has obtained a Payment Institution license in Malta under the EU’s PSD2 framework, allowing it to offer regulated payment services across the European Union. The authorization was granted to its local entity, Gate Technology, by the Malta Financial Services Authority, adding payment functionality to the firm’s existing crypto permissions in the region.

The license enables Gate to execute payment transactions, including credit transfers, direct debits, and payment account operations, in compliance with EU payments law. The move follows the company’s earlier approval under the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA), which allows it to provide exchange and custody services across member states, signaling a broader strategy to integrate traditional financial infrastructure with digital asset services.

The approval reflects a wider compliance trend among exchanges seeking to support euro-denominated fiat and stablecoin flows within regulated frameworks. As PSD2 authorization allows passporting of payment services across the bloc, the license strengthens Gate’s institutional positioning and expands its scope beyond trading into regulated payment and account services.
