Bittensor Surge Sparks AI Token Rally as Distributed Training Gains Traction

Bittensor’s breakout drives a surge in AI tokens as distributed model training gains credibility in crypto markets.

The recent surge in TAO has ignited renewed momentum across AI-focused crypto assets. The token, tied to the Bittensor ecosystem, nearly doubled in price during March, becoming the primary driver behind gains in broader AI token indices.

Data shows the GMCI AI Index rose significantly in recent weeks, though it remains well below its 2024 peak. Notably, the index is heavily concentrated, with TAO, RNDR, and ASI accounting for over 70% of its weight. This concentration means Bittensor’s performance has outsized influence on the sector’s perceived strength.

The rally appears to be rooted in growing recognition of Bittensor’s technical capabilities. A major milestone came with the release of Covenant-72B, a large-scale language model trained across more than 70 distributed nodes. The model achieved competitive benchmark results, approaching the performance of centralized systems like Llama 2, challenging the long-held belief that decentralized training is inefficient or impractical.

This breakthrough has helped legitimize distributed AI training as a viable alternative to traditional approaches. It also fueled significant gains within Bittensor’s subnet ecosystem, where smaller tokens tied to specific network functions have seen rapid growth. Increased activity in decentralized compute markets further supports this trend, as demand for scalable AI infrastructure rises.

The narrative has gained additional traction through recognition from prominent figures such as Jensen Huang and Chamath Palihapitiya, amplifying visibility and investor interest.

With over two-thirds of TAO supply staked and a growing ecosystem of applications, Bittensor is positioning itself as a key player at the intersection of AI and blockchain. While risks remain, the recent rally suggests markets are beginning to price in the long-term potential of decentralized AI infrastructure.
